Anxiety and Stress — A Chinese Herbal Prescription (8)

ANXIETY and STRESS – - As you know, anxiety is a complicated condition brought on by various problems of life. It would be nice if I could write a prescription to make all your problems go away. However, you know that I don’t have that kind of power, especially in financial matters, personal relationships, job security, or business dealings. Nevertheless, I can help you reduce the physical stress that anxiety brings. Anxiety throws your body out of balance. As a result, various physical problems tend to surface and resurface, such as indigestion, overeating, sleep difficulty, migraines, skin rash, burst of temper, energy drain, etc. The prescription should help your body achieve the balance that has been lost. How? Balance is a delicate thing. You can only restore it by gently nourishing the major organs back to their normal conditions. When they become stronger, they will be able to find their own way to balance without you having to tell them how. As a result, you will feel much better overall. The Chinese approach to anxiety is to nourish, moisten, and soothe. The word is 潤, pronounced as “ren”, for which I cannot find an English word similar in meaning. The prescription should basically be a combination of gentle nourishing for all major organs.

Nearly 1/2 the US populations turns to complementary, alternative and integrative practices to maintain or improve their health. Dr. Ellen Hughes explores what consumers need to know when considering herbs and supplements. Series: “UCSF Mini Medical School for the Public” [12/2007] [Health and Medicine] [Show ID: 13112]

You’re trying to look at ancient Chinese medicine through the prism of modern science, and interprete it from a Western viewpoint.
I don’t do it the way you do.
So I still cannot answer your question about adaptogen. Sorry again!

@askjohnfung An adaptogen is a phytonutrient that has the amazing ability to help normalize or adapt the bodys physiologic functions to a higher rate of functioning, regardless of the persons current health status . Adaptogens are able to take you from where you are, so to speak, and then help move you to the next level. This action is thought to be mediated via the hypothalmic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the pathway linked to longevity.

    Of course it does matter.
Normally, use no more than 10 grams for each herb in the package.

The traditional way is to boil and simmer the herbs in water for about one half. Then drink the solution. Throw away the boiled herbs.
One cup of solution a day is good enough.

The Dang Shen shown in your video looks much bigger than what my local Chinese Herb shop sells. Their Dang Shen is sold as lots of small lengths. Are the larger roots better quality and more effective?

You drink one cup a day for 2 weeks initially to see if it helps. Then wait for a week or so to see how you do without the tea.
If you do better, you may not have to drink it until you slide back into the previous condition.
If you cannot see any difference. You may have to continue drinking and see if the tea will bring any good results. The ingredients will have to be changed to bring you better results.

Though I do feel herbal supplements are beneficial in their own ways, people taking them should tell their healthcare professionals they are using them. Herbals are medications too, even though they are from a natural source. They have their own set of side effects and interactions with foods and other drugs (including other herbals!). Just make sure to keep your doctors and pharmacists informed about everything you take, and do your research before starting anything (prescription or OTC).

This is fantastic. I have a life threatening condition and am dealing with early stages of menopause, depression and extreme moodiness. I have turned to herbs and found relief. I am so thrilled UCSF has done this and validated alternative practices that do work.

I tried to go to lifelonglearning.ucsf.edu and there was a denial screen there.

Please share the amount of mg’s used in the studies. Studies by certain people usually do not give enough mg’s to the patients for the herbs to be effective. Share the truth, please!!!

I cannot beleive that new-age superstition, affinity towards naturism, rejection of science and fear of ‘artificial’ medication have got into academia. I love dr Ellen Hughes but i have to say that her research is prejudiced, biased and non objective, is just sophisticated naturism
